Misconduct can occur when a forger transfers pages with J.K. Rowling’s signature from one book to another. Here is an example that was discovered on eBay: a paperback fourth printing Philosopher’s Stone was signed and dedicated in 1997 and sold on eBay by the original owner. Months later, that buyer sold a “first printing” Philosopher’s Stone with the identical signature and dedication page. The transfer of the signature and dedication page increased the sale amount for the forger.

eBay, book websites, auction houses, and private sales are full of counterfeit signatures. Unfortunately, to the untrained eye, many of these signatures appear authentic. Though reputable book sellers or autograph authenticators may seem like good people to ask, they are usually not experts on J.K. Rowling's signature. There have been many Certificates of Authenticity issued by these sellers and authenticators for counterfeit signatures. We have 15 years of collecting and studying only J.K. Rowling's signature including year to year evolution, pen stroke habits, handwriting, and what books and editions certain signature versions can and should be found.
